Understanding funding

Capacity Building Supports

Help you develop skills, independence and confidence to work towards your goals.

1

Building skills

Intended to help you do more for yourself over time.

2

Nine categories

Your plan may include funding in one or more of them.

3

Stated funding

Must be used within the category described in your plan.

01

What are they?

One of the four support budgets. They fund supports intended to build your skills, independence and ability to manage areas of everyday life. You only receive funding in the categories approved for your needs and goals.

02

The nine categories

Support Coordination

Help to understand and use your plan, connect with providers and become more confident managing supports. Usually funded for a limited period.

Improved Living Arrangements

Help to find and maintain suitable housing — searching, applying, preparing for inspections, understanding tenancy responsibilities. Rent and bonds are not generally NDIS supports.

Increased Social and Community Participation

Skills and confidence to join social, recreational and community activities — hobby groups, sport, social skills, making connections, building independence in the community.

Finding and Keeping a Job

Time limited employment support — work skills, career planning, work experience, preparing for employment, moving into further education, and skills needed to keep a job.

Improved Relationships

Behaviour support assessments, Behaviour Support Plans, specialist behaviour support, and social skills development.

Improved Health and Wellbeing

Disability related supports for physical or mental wellbeing — a dietitian, exercise physiologist, or a personal trainer with appropriate experience. Ordinary medical treatment that belongs in the health system is not funded here.

Improved Learning

Help moving from school into further education or training — applying for courses, managing workload, study skills, literacy tutoring, moving into TAFE or university.

Improved Life Choices

Financial and organisational skills for managing your plan. Plan Manager funding sits here when plan management is approved.

Improved Daily Living

Assessments, training or therapies that build functional skills and independence — occupational therapy, speech pathology, physiotherapy, psychology, functional assessments, and daily living skills training.

This funding is stated

Funding approved in one Capacity Building category cannot usually be moved into another. Improved Daily Living funding cannot automatically be used for Support Coordination. Within a category, you can still choose the specific support and provider.

03

Keep track of progress

These supports are meant to build skills, so keep information showing what support you received, how often, what you worked on, what progress you made, what got in the way, whether it remains appropriate, and what may be needed next. That is exactly what helps at a reassessment.
