01

What are Capital Supports?

One of the four support budgets that may appear in an NDIS plan. Generally used for higher cost or specialised supports that improve independence, mobility, communication, personal care, or access to your home and community.

02

Assistive technology

Equipment or devices that help you complete tasks or participate more independently — mobility equipment, communication equipment, personal care equipment, certain hearing related equipment, vehicle modifications, replacement of approved equipment, and approved repairs, rentals or trials.

The exact item must be supported by your plan and meet the NDIS funding rules.

03

Home modifications and Specialist Disability Accommodation

May include approved modifications to improve access or safety at home, major home modifications, and Specialist Disability Accommodation where a participant meets the requirements.

SDA funding relates to the physical dwelling. It is separate from the daily supports a person receives while living there.

04

Capital funding is stated

It must be used for the support and category described in your plan. You cannot move it into Core, Capacity Building or Recurring Supports, or use funding approved for one item to buy a different item, unless your plan permits it or the NDIA approves the change.

05

Quotes and assessments

The NDIA may require an assessment from a qualified professional, a written recommendation, one or more quotes, information about risks and expected benefits, evidence the support is suitable, and information about lower cost alternatives.

Your plan may say a quote is required before the funding becomes available.

Do not purchase first and hope

Do not assume the NDIA will reimburse an expensive item because it relates to your disability. Confirm the item is in your plan, the funding is available, any quote or approval requirements are done, and you understand maintenance, repair and warranty arrangements.
