Advocacy and external support

Who can help you speak up.

If you want to understand your rights, raise a concern, or challenge a decision, you do not have to do it alone, and you do not have to come to us first.

Independent support

What is an independent advocate?

Someone whose job is to be on your side. They do not work for SCL, the NDIA or the NDIS Commission. They are independent of all of us, and that is the point.

An advocate can help you:

  • Understand your rights
  • Say what you want to happen
  • Prepare for meetings
  • Make a complaint
  • Challenge a decision
  • Deal with providers or government agencies

Find an advocate near you

The Australian Government Disability Gateway lists advocacy organisations by state and territory, and links to the Ask Izzy advocacy finder.

Your choice

If your concern is about SCL

You can speak to your support worker or service manager, submit feedback, report a concern confidentially, or ask an advocate to do it for you.

You are not required to raise it with us first. If you would rather go straight to the NDIS Commission or an advocate, that is your right and it will not affect your supports.

Complaints and decisions

When the issue is a provider or NDIS decision

You can go directly to the relevant organisation. You do not have to raise a provider complaint with SCL first.
