How we match
The right person matters.
We employ our support workers directly and aim to build continuity around the participant, not simply fill a shift with whoever is available.
Matching is never a perfect formula. Your preferences, support needs and how you feel with the worker all matter.

What matters in a match
Support needs and skills
The worker needs the skills and experience required for the support you receive.
Communication
We consider how you communicate and the style of communication that works best for you.
Preferences, culture and identity
Language, culture, gender preferences and other personal considerations can matter to a good match.
Personality and interests
Shared interests and a comfortable personal fit can make everyday support feel more natural.
Availability and continuity
A good match also needs to work across the days, times and location of your supports.
Shared home considerations
For SIL, the preferences and routines of the people already living in the home also matter.
How matching works
- 1
We listen
We ask what matters to you in a worker, including what has worked well and what has not.
- 2
You can meet first
Where appropriate, you can meet a proposed worker before regular supports begin.
- 3
We check in early
After support starts, we ask how the match feels and make changes when something is not working.
If the match is not right
Tell us. You do not need a serious reason and you do not have to justify a personal preference. Asking for a different worker is a normal service request and it will not affect how you are treated.
Tell us early if
- You feel uncomfortable
- Communication is difficult
- Your preferences are not being respected
- The worker does not understand your support needs
- You would simply prefer someone else
If something happened that made you feel unsafe, use our report a concern pathway instead.
Matching in supported independent living
In a shared home, the people you live with are part of the decision too. Compatibility can include routines, communication, culture, interests, support needs and what everyone already living in the home wants.
You should be involved in decisions about where you live and who you live with.
More about SIL fundingTell us what matters to you.
The more we understand about how you like to be supported, the better the first match is likely to be.
